Tools for monitoring toxicological and genotoxicological changes in a drinking water treatment plant in Northeast Italy

Drinking water quality can be compromised at different stages, from raw to treated one. This research aimed evaluate the toxicity and genotoxicity of groundwater contaminated by fluorinated compounds in a drinking treatment plant, through several bioassays. Water samples underwent chemical analyses were assayed on Daphnia magna, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, Allium cepa, human leukocytes Salmonella typhimurium. Physical–chemical parameters always within Italian legislation limits. after filtration disinfection caused slight D. magna; sample inhibited proliferation P. subcapitata. None exerted A. cepa. All analysed had genotoxic effects cepa leucocytes, while only disinfected mutations S. A battery composed tests typhimurium could represent useful tool verify toxicity/genotoxicity stages improve management.
